The mint julep is a refreshing classic that isn't reserved only for the Kentucky Derby.

Ingredients
2ouncesbourbon
1teaspoonrich simple syrup2:1 ratio of sugar to water
several mint sprigsspearmint preferred
crushed ice
Instructions
Lightly tamp around a dozen mint leaves in the bottom of a julep tin. The goal is to gently release the oils.
Add a teaspoon of rich simple syrup and some ice. (Ice will be added in three steps.) Stir.
Add more ice and 2 ounces of bourbon. Stir.
Insert straw and large plume of mint to garnish.
Top with one last portion of ice.
Notes
For the ice, you can crush ice at home in a Lewis bag, but you'll have better results purchasing pellet (nugget) ice from a location like a Sonic Drive In. There is also the GE Opal Countertop Nugget Ice Maker if you want the ultimate in convenience.
